NOW THAT THE FALL IS HERE… LET’S TALK CUSHIONS!

As the temperatures start to drop, we all crave a little extra comfort in our homes as cozy spaces make the season so much more enjoyable.
One of the easiest ways to add warmth is with throw pillows and if you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I have a soft spot for them. Small as they seem, cushions can completely change the feel of a room.
Which brings us to the question: is it possible to have too many cushions? Yes, it is. A sofa with so many cushions you can’t even sit comfortably, or a bed that takes five minutes to clear every night… this becomes impractical. The secret is balance and choosing the right pillows.
Here are some easy ways to combine cushions to change the look of your sofa or bed.
COLOR
Cushions are the perfect way to experiment with color. They can liven up a neutral room or tie together tones already present in your space.
- If your sofa and walls are neutral, try dramatic colors or fun prints. Just balance cushions with prints with solid ones so the look doesn’t get too busy
- If your room already has strong colors, pick cushions that echo those shades to create harmony
- Take inspiration from artwork or rugs. Repeat one or two colors from them in your cushions to make the room feel cohesive
- Don’t shy away from prints
SIZE
Cushion size is just as important as color or pattern. The trick is layering:
- On sofas, start with larger cushions at the back, then layer smaller ones in front.
- On beds, you have more room to play. Begin with oversized squares near the headboard and finish with smaller or lumbar cushions up front. The mix of sizes creates depth and interest.
FORM
Cushions don’t have to be all square! There are rectangular, round cushions, and even fun-shaped cushions. Squares and rectangles mix well on sofas. Round cushions add a soft, unexpected detail. Fun-shaped cushions… best saved for kids’ rooms.
TEXTURE
Texture is an overlooked tool. It brings coziness, exactly what we crave in fall and winter. Consider velvet, linen, wool, or leather. Even just one tasseled cushion can elevate a whole arrangement.
SMALL DETAILS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
FILLING – choose soft inserts so cushions feel inviting, not stiff.
SYMMETRY – resist the urge to always be symmetrical.
EXPERT EYE – if all the choices feel overwhelming, that’s normal, there are so many colors, patterns, and textures to choose from. As a decorator, I can help you simplify the choices and put together a cushion mix that feels just right for your home.
Sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. Cushions are one of those things: with a few smart choices, your home will feel ready for the cold season ahead.
